09-04-30 - Rydell heads to Marrakech
Morocco has not hosted a World Championship racing event since 1958, until this weekend. The WTCC comes to Africa for the first time and will now race on a new street circuit in Marrackech. SEAT driver Rickard Rydell is currently tied on points with joint championship leader and teammate Yvan Muller.
The 1958 Formula 1 championship finished in Casablanca and saw Mike Hawthorn secure his only title after an interesting battle with Strirling Moss. Swede Jo Bonnier finished the race in a fine fourth place in his BRM. Some 50 years later it is time for another World Championship to come to Morocco. This time the WTCC will race in Marrakech, on a new street circuit for the fifth and sixth rounds of the series.
Rickard Rydell has been on the podium in all four races of 2009, including a win in Mexico, and is currently tied on points in the lead with teammate Yvan Muller.
”I like street circuits so it will be very interesting to race in Marrakech. This track has very long straights and that means that teamwork in qualifying will be important” Rickard Rydell said.
During the April break the teams have had time to test. SEAT Sport has been to Magny-Cours in France and Algarve in Portugal, Rydell driving for a total of three days.
”We are well prepared for this new circuit. During the tests we have worked on those areas most important for Marrakech, including stability under braking and traction out of the corners. Going into this weekend it’s difficult to have any expectations as a lot of things tend to happen on street circuits.”
