10-02-22 - No racing for Rydell in 2010
After 20 years as a works driver Rickard Rydell has decided to not race this year. The Swede will not leave the sport completely as he is engaged as a pundit on Swedish tv channel Viasat Motor. Rydell also keeps the door open for a return to touringcars in 2011.
Rickard Rydell will not race in 2010. It is the first time since 1977 when he started in karting. In 1986 he graduated to Formula 3 and since 1990 Rydell has been a factory driver for Toyota, Volvo, SEAT and Aston Martin. During those 20 seasons the Swede has won the Macau Grand Prix in 1992 (TOM’S-Toyota), BTCC in 1998 (Volvo) and the GT1 category in Le Mans in 2007 (Aston Martin).
”SEAT withdrew the factory team from the WTCC during the winter and I felt early that I would not find another drive that would meet my requirements. The most important thing for me is to race with a competetive car capable of fighting for victories and championships. If the right drive will be available next year I would be more than happy to return to touringcars”, said Rickard Rydell.
The hunger to race is still there, but also the interest in doing other things. This year Rydell will be a pundit on tv channel Viasat Motor, mainly on the massive live coverage of the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC).
”For many years I have had up to 200 days of travelling and it will be great to spend more time at home. I also look forward to work with Viasat Motor again, which is one of a few things I will do in 2010 instead of being a racing driver.”
